Research Hours

At the Math and Science Academy, we're required to complete a senior capstone project the summer leading up to our senior year. Before we can begin, however, we need to have completed and documented at least 140 hours of research. The following are oppurtunities for me to fufill those hours:

Summer Residential Governor's School for Life Sciences and Medicine

30 rising juniors and seniors are chosen to spend four weeks on campus at Virginia Commonwealth University to learn more about this field. The application can be found on the Virginia Department of Education website, although space is limited and acceptance into the program is competitive. Other than getting to learn about the medical field, this summer program would be a good fit for me because I am considering applying to VCU's physical therapy school when I am a senior. The actual residency takes place from June 29 to July 26. Applicants must reply a prompt and indicate if they have any experience with a mentor in this field.

There are similar college summer experiences at Duke and William & Mary that I would also be interested in as a future college student.

Coursera: Introductory Human Physiology

Coursera is a free online education system with over 600 courses. This course highlights the basic concepts that govern body function, and would be relevant to the studies I want to continue in the field of physical therapy.

Coursera: Exercise Physiology: Understanding the Athlete Within

This course would provide deeper insight into the physiological responses to acute and chronic exercise associated with athletic performance. Along with the course mentioned above, this online course could help prepare me for my senior capstone project, as I would not be taking an anatomy and physiology course in school until senior year begins.
